ESWT Shock wave therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy

ESWT is a breakthrough in technology that allows us to treat longstanding chronic tendon problems, such as achilles tendinopathy and calcific shoulder tendonitis, in a fast and effective way.

The technology is based on lithotripsy, which has been used for many years to treat kidney stones. Shockwaves refers to mechanical pressure pulses that are focused on the injured area using a special applicator. These shockwaves will break down scar tissue and calcifications in the area, which in chronic cases the body is unable to repair itself. As the shockwave breaks down the tissue, the body starts generating new tissue leading to improved healing, better function and relief of pain.

Fast and Effective | Evidence Based | No Medication and Non-Invasive Treatment
Why is this treatment better than surgery or steroid injections?
Clinically proved effectiveness
Quick and efficient treatment that takes 10-20 minutes
No anaesthesia necessary
Non-invasive
Virtually painless after treatment
No medication
Quick results
High success rates
Improved quality of life

What can be treated with Shockwave?
-Shoulder Pain – Calcific Tendonitis of the shoulder and Shoulder impingment
-Elbow Pain – Golfers and Tennis Elbow
-Achilles Tendon problems
-Gluteal Tendinopathy/Trochanteric bursitis – pain on the outside of the hip
-Plantar fasciitis / Heel Pain
-Patella Tendonitis – pain on the tip of the knee cap
-Shin Splints

-Chronic spinal pain

How many treatments will I need?
Most of the research evidence supports 3-5sessions delivered once to twice a week, however some of the most chronic conditions may take up to 5-6. We offer a package for 3 or 5 sessions, however they can be purchased on a session by session basis.

Is shockwave therapy covered by private health insurance?
Yes. Most private health insurance companies cover the cost of treatment for shockwave therapy although it is advised you contact your insurer prior to booking a consultation to ensure you’re covered.

We will use ESWT as part of your physiotherapy management but if you are having treatment elsewhere that doesn’t offer shockwave we are very happy to see you here and we can easily communicate with any other professionals you are working with.

If you would like to speak with one of our Physiotherapists about Shockwave Therapy or book an appointment, then please phone 0191 4350560 or you can book online.

How does ESWT Work?

-Stimulating New Blood vessels Formation.
ESWT stimulates the production of new blood vessels at the affected muscles and tendons by increasing the release of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factors (VGEF) , Growth Factor Beta 1, chemotactic and mitogenic effect on otseoblasts.
-Cellular effects
Increase in cell membrane transmittance by improving ionic channels activity, stimulating cell division, stimulation of cellular cytokines production.
-Effect on nitogen oxide system: Bone healing and remodeling
-Improvement of microcirculation and metabolism.
-Dissolution of calcified fibroblasts.
-Increase collagen production.
This is important in the repair of myoskeletal and ligamental structures
-Reduction of tissue tension
-Analgesic pain relief
-Reversal of Chronic Inflammation
